Traveling the Alps in low season

Traveling the Alps in low season

Marilou Cabatingan, 01/27/202508/28/2025

Lush green meadows, and hardly a human being far and wide. Nature glows with new splendor and with some luck, you can spot marmots and deer. Doesn’t that sound like a dream holiday in the Alps? If you book your vacation in a less frequented time namely in low season it might look like this.

Low Season in the Alpes

When is the low season in the Alps? It’s no longer possible to narrow it down quite that sweepingly. The climate change and the resulting lack in snow have forced many Alpine destinations into a change of mindset. It’s a matter of adapting the tourist offer to the consequences of climate change.

Due to the increasing number of summer days, summer will increase, and winter will become shorter. But why should you definitely travel to the Alps in the low season? We have found some good reasons. Have fun reading!

Summit Lodges in Pfunds invites you for biking or hiking

Are you a nature lover? Then the Alps are highly recommended as a vacation destination, especially in spring: “There’s something exceptional about nature slowly reawakening after a long winter and the snow giving way to the lush green of the mountain meadows,” enthuses Marco Spiss, owner of the Summit Lodges in Pfunds.

The cozy log cabins of Summit Lodges Pfunds are the perfect starting point for explorations into nature.

And because the evenings are often very cool in the off-season, you can warm up and relax afterwards in front of your fireplace or in the sauna. Are you interested in the authentic life in the Alps, then Marco has another tip for you: “The low season is actually the best time of year to get to know the culture of our region!”

The so called Almabtriebe, are a particularly worth seeing event. It is colorful, loud, and cheerful at the Almabtriebe, in which the cows are led from the alp for the winter back to the valley. The animals are beautifully decorated.Naturally, there are also festivities with traditional music and a farmers’ market with regional products.

Winter sports from early December

One or the other of you may want to see the mountains dressed in glorious white anyway and try their luck at skiing. Is that possible in the low season? Yes, it is possible.

The HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu suggests: come best already at the beginning of December!

This time, which is still a bit quieter, is perfect for cross-country skiing or long ski tours in Balderschwang – before the ski slopes start filling up at the end of December. Provided, of course, the weather will play along. If it doesn’t, no problem because the HUBERTUS is inviting you to a holistic pampering program with Slow Food, their wonderful new Spa area, Yoga, and a variety of coaching sessions. The view of the Allgäu Mountains is gorgeous from the infinity pool.

The low season is much more pleasant for visiting charming Oberstdorf too. At this time, you can take a leisurely stroll through the Old Town or take a look at the World Cup ski jump.

Relaxation in Sölden

As the saying goes. In Sölden, the bears are bustling. In fact, (almost ) all year round. But there is also a time when it becomes a little quieter. And that is the autumn. “ Sölden presents itself in autumn from a very different side, highly diverse as the whole year, but a bit dreamier, quieter,” reveals Marco Arnold from LENI MOUNTAIN.

For locals, this translates into: time to breathe deeply. To get ready for the winter. Many usually crowded places are deserted, wildlife comes down to the village, as well as the first snow.

During this time, you can also make a” real” time out in the otherwise busy Sölden and quite a few power places to visit for deceleration.

The LENI MOUNTAIN apartments are located slightly above the village, and many hiking trails begin right in front of the doors. After hiking through the autumn mountain forests, relax your tired limbs during a sweat break in the LENI sauna or strengthen yourself in the café.

Taking advantage of empty tracks and slopes

The cozy log cabins of the Summit Lodges Pfunds are the perfect starting point for explorations into nature. Mountain bikers and other active sports enthusiasts will also find perfect conditions to go biking or hiking in peace.

Family Kneisl, the hosts of the stylishly furnished apartments and chalets The Peak in Sölden, love the autumn in the Tyrolean Ötztal and are ready to help you with advice and support. Why not plan a hike from the Wellerbrücke to the Piburger See? This is where the Acherkogel reflects – An exceptional natural jewel that you don’t just stumble across, because a wooded ridge separates Piburg from Oetz in the front Ötztal.

Or do you prefer skiing on a glacier? This is already possible from the end of September on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers. The glacier ski area is connected by a spectacular ski link tunnel – and definitely worth a visit!

As you can see, vacationing in the off-season has many advantages. The biggest one, however, might be: You can explore the region in peace. And that is the most important thing in a vacation.
